What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a hands-on form of healthcare that focuses on diagnosing, treating and preventing pain and movement problems affecting the muscles, joints, spine and connective tissues.

An osteopath looks at how the entire body functions together. When joints, muscles or nerves are not moving well, it can lead to pain, stiffness and reduced mobility. Osteopathic treatment aims to restore healthy movement and support the body’s natural ability to heal.

At our clinic in Tweed Heads, osteopathy is commonly sought by people with back pain, neck pain, headaches, sports injuries and pregnancy-related discomfort.

Osteopathy takes a holistic approach to care, meaning treatment focuses not only on the area of pain but also on the underlying factors that may be contributing to the problem.

A Whole Body Approach to Treatment

One of the key principles of osteopathy is that the body works as an interconnected system.

Pain in one part of the body may be influenced by tension, weakness or restricted movement elsewhere.

For example:

  • Lower back pain may be related to hip mobility or posture

  • Neck pain may be influenced by shoulder tension or desk posture

  • Headaches can sometimes originate from tight muscles in the neck and upper back

Osteopaths assess the whole body to identify the underlying cause of symptoms rather than simply treating the area where pain is felt.

Treatment Techniques We Use

Osteopathy treatment is not one-size-fits all. Techniques may include:

  • Soft tissue massage and myofascial release

  • Joint mobilisation and articulation

  • Muscle stretching

  • Adjustments

  • Rehabilitation exercises

  • Postural and ergonomic advice

  • Dry needling (optional) to help relieve muscle tension and pain

  • Cupping therapy (optional) to improve circulation and tissue mobility

All treatment techniques are optional. Dry needling, cupping, and adjustments, in particular, are always discussed beforehand and only included if appropriate and if you’re comfortable.
