What is Pelvic Floor Osteopathy?
Pelvic floor osteopathy is a specialised form of treatment aimed at restoring function, strength, and coordination to the muscles, ligaments and fascia of the pelvic region. These structures play a vital role in continence, core stability, sexual health and overall wellbeing.
Many people are unaware that osteopaths with the appropriate training can offer internal pelvic floor assessments and treatment. This allows us to work more directly and effectively with the pelvic floor muscles, something that external techniques alone can’t always achieve.
What Can Pelvic Floor Osteopathy Help With?
Postpartum 6 week check up (prolapse & return to exercise assessment) *this can be done any time from 6 weeks postpartum
If you are currently pregnant/birth preparation (from 2nd trimester)
Pelvic pain or tension
Pain with intercourse (dyspareunia)
Postnatal pelvic floor weakness
Incontinence (leakage with exercise, sneezing, urgency)
Heaviness or symptoms of prolapse
Constipation
Endometriosis-related pelvic pain
Preparation for or recovery after gynaecological surgery
What to Expect
Your first session will begin with a detailed discussion of your symptoms, history, and goals. We then perform a whole-body structural assessment and, where appropriate and with your informed consent, an internal pelvic floor assessment.
Internal work (vaginal) allows your osteopath to assess the tone, tension, and function of the pelvic floor muscles and identify areas of restrictions, tension or weakness. Treatment may involve gentle manual release techniques, myofascial work, muscle retraining and breathing strategies,
We also integrate individualised rehabilitation plans, including pelvic floor muscle retraining, movement-based therapy, and home strategies, to support long-term recovery and resilience.
Is Internal Work Always Necessary?
Not always. Internal treatment is offered only when appropriate, safe, and with your full consent. We’ll always talk you through your options and respect your boundaries. We are a trauma-informed practice, and your comfort and autonomy are at the heart of everything we do.
Who Is This For?
Internal pelvic floor osteopathy is for anyone with a pelvis, regardless of gender identity, life stage or reproductive history. Whether you are postpartum, navigating menopause, experiencing pelvic pain or just want to better understand your body, we’re here to support you.
A Whole-Body Approach
At our clinic, we view the pelvic floor as part of a broader system. Tension, weakness, or dysfunction in the pelvis is often influenced by the spine, hips, diaphragm, and nervous system. We address these connections holistically to support your body as a whole.
Let’s Talk About It
We know pelvic health can be a sensitive topic, but you deserve support, understanding, and evidence-informed care. Whether you’re dealing with discomfort, dysfunction, or just curious about how pelvic floor osteopathy might help, we’re here to listen.
